what about using a diode between the battery and the alternator that prevents electricity being used from the battery and can only be charged. And connect the inverter directly to the second battery, that way it can only draw power from that battery.

The most effective way to charge an additional battery from a single alternator is by use to a Split Charging setup. You can buy kits from various sources and they are common amongst both campers, where a leisure battery is maintained and competition audio enthusiasts (ICE cars) whereby several heavy duty batteries to drive additional amplifiers make up part of the cars sound system. Without a split charging diode in the circuit you have nothing to isolate your batteries and prevent strange behaviours as one battery approaches full charge.

"Diode" or "Relais" might help you on your google quest. Be aware that some generators don't do to well if you make them charge a much bigger battery. As a rule of thumb the Generator current (in amps) should be in the range of the Battery (in Ah). If you want that thing to reliably work, you may need to upgrade the generator as well.

Thats Easy: Get a Voltmeter: Measure the Voltage, when your motor isn't started yet (11-12V usually) and measure again after powering the motor, so the alternator is up (should be >12V, usually up to 13.8V). Now you need a circut that switches e relay when there is more than ~12V. These are availiable cheap. Get one with an high-Ampere-Rating Relais! Bonus: When your Primary Battery runs low, it will charge it to some point before switching to the second battery. Cons: High Currents as the Primary Battery is used to charge the second one, once the relay is activated.
